One-year-old Londyn Samuels was killed in New Orleans on Thursday night, August 29. Shot while being held in her babysitter’s arms, the beautiful baby girl was reportedly just learning to walk steadily. According to New Orleans Times-Picayune reporter Michelle Hunter, Londyn enjoyed dancing and was the younger sister of three-year-old Paris Samuels.
The girls’ mother, Andrea Samuels, is 22 and works at Cafe Reconcile, a nonprofit restaurant in New Orleans committed to combatting poverty by offering culinary education, job training, and employment to area young adults. A press conference was held at Cafe Reconcile following the tragedy.
We were deeply affected by this tragedy here at Beyond Baby Mamas. Having written about single mothers of color being disproportionately affected by tragedies like this one — violent crimes resulting in loss of life, particularly as a result of gunfire — we immediately started thinking of ways to show our support for Londyn’s mom, Andrea.
This morning, I reached out to Reconcile New Orleans/Cafe CEO Glen Armantrout, with an idea I’ve been thinking about since hearing about Londyn’s passing. He was gracious enough to allow Beyond Baby Mama to execute it.
Here’s the idea: we want to send letters of encouragement, support, and hope to Andrea. Obviously, we’re most interested in making sure mothers are among those writing — especially young mothers, mothers who’ve experienced similar loss, and mothers whose lives have been directly affected by gun violence. But we also want to open the campaign to anyone who’d like to show support to Andrea Samuels in her family’s time of unspeakable grief.
Most importantly, the Samuels family has established a memorial fund in Londyn’s honor. Local monetary donations can be dropped off at Cafe Reconcile or at local Capital One Banks.
Beyond Baby Mamas would like everyone who sends a letter to include a monetary donation for the family’s memorial fund, if you can. Beyond Baby Mamas will also be sending a donation on behalf of those who want to write but cannot afford to include a financial contribution.
All outer envelopes must be marked “personal and confidential.” Write or stamp those words on the outside envelope and mail to the following address:

Glen will forward all letters and donations for Andrea to her. We ask that if you’re sending letters as part of our #LoveForLondyn campaign, you mention that and Beyond Baby Mamas in your letter.
